What Happened

Following the closure of a Wiltshire pressing company, Birmingham Specialities was called upon to assist customers with their orders. Putting our experience and know-how to work, we managed to grow with and retain all the customers that originally placed the work with BSL, following the closure.

The Problem

The closure of a pressing company that had been running for 54 years. The company had been operating in engineering services, tool designing and manufacturing.
It closed due to a lack of desire to invest the necessary funds to meet customers’ and employees’ expectations.

The Request

Due to the closure, our shared customers asked for assistance with resourcing projects.
Since the notice was only a few months, it was imperative to move quickly to support the customers.

The Solution

BSL entered the engineering business. Our team cleared the property of tooling, material and part documentation, which was all relocated to our warehouse facility for sorting. In fact, a vast amount of supporting documentation was missing.
We purchased 2 new presses as the original customer-owned presses had not passed recertification. The transferred presses were deemed unsafe for use as they did not pass the compulsory certification required by law.
Also, to ensure BSL and the customers had a clear understanding of each other’s requirements, we established constant communication and visits between all departments in the respective businesses, including Commercial, Operations, Quality and Goods out.
We collected approximately 400 references from six main accounts and several smaller ones. After liaising with all the customers, we retained in excess of 80% of the business.

Our Impact

The impact on BSL’s administration covered a minimum 6-month period.

Our achievements are as follows:

Achieved minimal supply disruption for customers

We updated the database, and our production items are now fully documented.

We created capacity and increased personnel levels from the Quality Department to shop floor staff.

The situation triggered investment in the new building for additional storage and manufacturing space.

We have grown with and retained all the customers that originally placed the work with BSL following the closure.
